Vietnam is urging stronger collaboration with Japan in key sectors such as strategic technologies, including semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and renewable energy. This call for enhanced cooperation was made on September 3 during discussions between Vietnamese science and technology officials and a delegation from Japan’s House of Representatives. The discussions primarily revolved around semiconductor research, advancements in AI and energy technologies, personnel training, and fostering closer ties between businesses in these strategic sectors.
As part of the ongoing NEXUS joint research program, Vietnam and Japan are co-funding semiconductor research efforts that encompass chip design, advanced materials, supporting technologies, and manufacturing processes. Both nations aim to expand this cooperation further beyond 2027. Vietnam is also seeking Japan’s assistance in building its sovereign AI capabilities, including the development of Vietnamese-language large language models. To advance these goals, a joint working group from both countries is scheduled to convene in October, focusing on technology transfer and bolstering business connections in the semiconductor industry.
Vietnam has put forward a proposal to transform NEXUS into an annual cooperative framework, extending its reach to include research in AI, new materials, renewable energy, and biomedicine. The country is also advocating for closer business partnerships and enhanced training opportunities for engineers and experts in strategic technology fields. This highlights Vietnam’s commitment to developing a skilled workforce capable of supporting its technological growth.
Japan has shown interest in Vietnam’s semiconductor initiatives, labor policies, and long-term energy strategy, which includes plans to expand nuclear power. Vietnam is pursuing a diversified energy mix that combines conventional energy sources with renewables and nuclear power, including research into small modular reactors. Recognizing the significant investment and skilled workforce required for this energy transition, Vietnam has expressed its hope that Japan will continue to be a key partner in building the necessary energy infrastructure to support its burgeoning high-tech industries.
