In a significant move to reinforce ties, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Solomon Islands Prime Minister Matthew Wale convened for the first time in Tokyo. This meeting signals a fresh chapter in bilateral relations, particularly in light of the Solomon Islands’ recent foreign policy shifts under its new administration. The leaders committed to enhancing development collaboration, which includes a generous provision of yen loans totaling 3 billion yen, or roughly $18.3 million, and are also looking to bolster people-to-people exchanges between the two nations.
Prime Minister Takaichi emphasized Japan’s intention to cultivate a robust and prosperous partnership with the Solomon Islands, anchored in mutual values such as freedom, democracy, the rule of law, and human rights. Wale expressed gratitude for Japan’s support, underscoring the critical assistance needed by Pacific island nations as they navigate various economic and developmental hurdles.
The backdrop of this meeting is a notable change in Solomon Islands’ foreign policy. The country had previously shifted its diplomatic allegiance from Taiwan to China in 2019 and subsequently inked a security deal with Beijing in 2022. This agreement permits Chinese naval vessels to utilize Solomon Islands’ ports and grants Chinese security personnel operating rights within the nation, raising alarms among regional allies about China’s expanding strategic foothold in the Pacific.
Since his inauguration in May 2026, Prime Minister Wale has suggested a re-evaluation of the security agreement with China. He has openly criticized China’s recent submarine-launched ballistic missile test conducted in the Pacific and has demonstrated a preference for stronger connections with traditional partners by prioritizing visits to Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and Japan.
For Japan, enhancing relations with the Solomon Islands aligns with its overarching goal of fostering a Free and Open Indo-Pacific, a strategy aimed at ensuring regional stability, security, and cooperation. In a gesture of goodwill, Prime Minister Takaichi presented Wale with a football from the Nara Prefectural Football Association, highlighting the sport’s popularity in the Solomon Islands and her own deep ties to Nara Prefecture.
