Japan faced a significant heatwave on July 21, with temperatures soaring past 40°C in various regions due to a potent high-pressure system. This marks the ninth consecutive year that the nation has witnessed such extreme temperatures, underscoring ongoing climate challenges.
The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that this heatwave was the first occurrence of temperatures exceeding 40°C since the term “kokushobi,” or “cruelly hot days,” was introduced in April to describe such conditions. In Gifu Prefecture, the city of Tajimi recorded the highest temperature at 40.3°C, with the nearby city of Gujo reaching 40°C. Additionally, Toyota, situated in Aichi Prefecture, experienced temperatures of 40.1°C.
By the afternoon, a staggering 255 of Japan’s 914 weather observation stations had reported temperatures of at least 35°C, illustrating the widespread impact of the heatwave across both eastern and western parts of the country. The persistent high temperatures have highlighted the severity of the current weather conditions.
In light of the escalating heat, the Environment Ministry and the Japan Meteorological Agency issued heatstroke alerts covering 42 prefectures, marking the highest number of alerts issued this year. Authorities strongly advised residents to utilize air conditioning, maintain hydration, and replenish salt levels to prevent heat-related illnesses.
