China has voiced apprehension regarding Japan’s intensifying military endeavors, cautioning that the nation’s recent defense strategies could jeopardize peace and stability in the region. These concerns were articulated by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun during a routine press briefing on Tuesday. The statement comes amidst reports of potential collaboration between Ukrainian drone companies and Japanese partners. Guo emphasized that international partnerships should aim to bolster regional security and stability rather than escalate existing tensions.
Guo highlighted that Japan has been on a path of military expansion in recent years, marked by the development of medium- and long-range offensive capabilities, the relaxation of restrictions on lethal weapons exports, and the broader engagement of its Self-Defense Forces. Additionally, Japan has been strengthening its security ties with nations beyond its immediate geographic area. These actions, according to Guo, extend beyond the constraints of Japan’s postwar defense framework and challenge the core principles of its traditionally defense-oriented security policy.
The spokesman underscored that such military advancements risk undermining the post-World War II international order and stand in contrast to Japan’s longstanding reputation as a nation committed to peace.
