Disney’s latest cinematic venture, a live-action adaptation of the cherished animated classic Moana, presents a fresh perspective on its central character. This reimagining portrays Moana not as a traditional princess but as a bold warrior, aiming to engage a new generation with its focus on bravery, empathy, and cultural identity.

Dwayne Johnson, who returns to embody the role of the demigod Maui, brings continuity from the 2016 animated film. Besides reprising his iconic character, Johnson takes on the role of producer for this adaptation. He emphasized Moana’s portrayal as “not a princess, but a warrior,” and highlighted the film’s themes of community, self-discovery, and Polynesian culture, which he believes hold a universal appeal for viewers of all ages.

The live-action film introduces Catherine Lagaʻaia, a 19-year-old Australian actress of Samoan descent, as the titular character. Chosen from a pool of more than 32,000 hopefuls, Lagaʻaia’s casting followed an extensive audition process. Reflecting on her portrayal of Moana, she shared that the role had a profound impact on her personal growth. Lagaʻaia admired the character’s compassion and empathy, particularly how Moana opts for understanding rather than anger during challenging times.

With a narrative centered on resilience, empathy, and authenticity, the film aims to resonate with Gen Alpha audiences while remaining faithful to the essence of the original story. The film’s approach is designed to inspire and connect with younger viewers by emphasizing these timeless values.

Moana’s live-action version was released in India on July 10, available in both English and Hindi, inviting a diverse audience to experience this modern retelling of a much-loved story.
