In a significant yet cautious move to ease diplomatic tensions, Japan’s Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi engaged in brief exchanges with his counterparts from China and Russia during the ASEAN summit held in Manila. This development marks an effort to maintain open channels of communication with both nations amid ongoing regional and global issues.
Motegi reported a short conversation with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, characterizing it as an informal exchange focused on bilateral relations. He highlighted the crucial role of continued dialogue in ensuring regional peace. However, the Chinese government has refuted claims of any formal meeting or planned interaction between the two ministers.
The Japanese foreign minister also held a brief discussion with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, which is notably the first known interaction between their top diplomats since Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Their dialogue covered bilateral relations and regional concerns, indicating a cautious approach to maintaining diplomatic contacts despite the strained relations.
Despite these renewed engagements, Japan firmly maintains its stance on supporting Ukraine and upholding sanctions against Russia. Analysts emphasize the importance of dialogue in managing bilateral issues but caution that such diplomatic interactions should not compromise Japan’s international commitments.
