by admin477351

Japan’s Defense Ministry is set to implement a new procurement system aimed at integrating advanced technologies developed by startups into the country’s defense equipment. Announced by Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi, the initiative seeks to foster innovation in fields such as drones and artificial intelligence, which are critical for modern warfare.

This fast-track program is designed to incentivize startups by providing upfront funding for technology development. The ministry is prioritizing the use of domestically produced components and is calling for proposals that include low-cost, mass-producible small attack drones and related equipment for the Ground Self-Defense Force and Maritime Self-Defense Force.

In its initial phase, the program will invite multiple companies to submit their concepts, with the selection process narrowing candidates through stages of prototype development and testing. Additionally, the ministry is on the lookout for technologies that can enhance warehouse management, reduce staffing needs, decrease aircraft noise, and improve working conditions for Air Self-Defense Force personnel.

Applications for the first round of proposals will open on October 2. The ministry anticipates that this new system will accelerate the adoption of innovative technologies, ultimately bolstering Japan’s defense capabilities.
