Anthropic has pledged an additional $20 million to Public First Action, a bipartisan advocacy group that focuses on artificial intelligence transparency, safety, and public education. This new contribution elevates Anthropic’s total support to $40 million. The AI company expressed that this increased funding arises from mounting concerns about the swift evolution of AI technologies and the potential hazards they may present, especially concerning its own Claude Mythos model. The company has clarified that the donation is exclusively for public education and AI policy initiatives, not for political candidate support.
This announcement coincides with heightened discussions in the United States regarding the regulation of advanced AI technologies. Anthropic argues that stronger protections are essential, as highly capable AI systems could threaten critical infrastructure like hospitals, power grids, and financial networks if misused. The announcement also aligns with the release of the Claude Mythos Preview, an advanced AI model centered on cybersecurity, now available to select users within government, technology, and financial sectors.
As part of its advocacy, Anthropic has called for stricter oversight of powerful AI systems. The company is pushing for mandatory independent testing and increased governmental authority to prevent the release of models that do not meet safety standards. CEO Dario Amodei has further recommended stronger export controls on advanced AI chips and strategies to deter foreign entities from replicating leading U.S. technologies.
While Anthropic pushes for rigorous regulations, some competitors argue that such measures could hinder innovation and diminish the United States’ global competitiveness, especially against China. The funding announcement comes at a pivotal time, just before the U.S. midterm elections, as artificial intelligence becomes a significant topic in policy and national security discussions.
